Set in Lowell, Massachusetts and based on the true story of boxer Micky Ward this movie shows a man (Micky) with little self-esteme who is following in the footsteps of his failed older brother and career managed by his mother. The family is large, hugely dysfunctional, alcohol and drug dependent, being lead by the dominating mother who ignores her crack smoking oldest son because she doesn’t want to deal with it and rules the other family members through intimidation and obvious manipulation. Eventually Micky separates from the family, finds some support with a girlfriend and starts making his own decisions. For the rest of the story go see the movie. Recommended!
